North American T-6 Harvard 4
The airplane North American T-6 Harvard 4 is a prepared for British aviation version of AT-6 Texan- the difference between those planes were in cockpit equipment. Plane has been constructed in 1937, in USA, for advanced training of military pilots. It is a low-wing monoplane with metal structure, retractable landing gear and is powered by 600HP radial engine .North American aircraft factory prepared two versions: BC-1 (for United States Army Air Corps) and SNJ (for air units of United States Navy). After the change of nomenclature in USAAC BC-1 were renamed to AT-6 Texan. Airplane was in use and mass production during the whole World War II. On such also trained Polish pilots in Great Britain and Canada. North American aircraft factory sold manufacturing licence to Canada, Australia and Sweden. Production had closed in about 20,000 copies.
After the end of the War USAF withdrawed Texans from service, but lack of newer training construction made USAF to find uncommon solution. In 1949 North American airplane factory had started hading every AT-6 that had survived. After the disassembly and inspection of every part, from the components that were in best shape, factory assembled new planes, marked T-6G. In this way in USA and Canada were made 2600 new planes.
During the years 1945 to 1959 Texans were exported to fifty countries. They were used especially as training planes but, for example in Congo and Algeria, local air forces sent Texans to assault missions in local conflicts. Texan is one of most popular oldtimers - to our times had survived a lot of airworthy airplanes, they "played" a lot of roles in movies for example as Japan Mitsubishi A6M "Zero" fighters.
